We, too, are merchants, merchants who’ve opened their home, a historic Liberty-style villa overlooking the Adriatic Sea, and will provide little else.

That’s right, we would like leave you alone, alone in a home environment where peace and quiet, the plain and simple values of privacy and hospitality are yours to be enjoyed and savoured, if only for a short time, the time away from your hectic schedule and complicated life in the city.

Sure, jogging on the beach, cycling along the coast, reading and relaxing on the rooftop terrace, sipping wines or tea in the tower room, is good fun, but you can do that at home, right?

   

Of course, you could hike up to the town’s charming old centre, visit the piazzas and churches, get a taste of some fine food, sample the sweet meats and goat cheese from the surrounding hills or enjoy a catch of fresh fish, discover the Abruzzo region’s wines, Montepulciano, Cerasuolo and Trebbiano, and amble back to the villa at the end of all that dolce far niente to sit on the rooftop terrace and watch the boring old moon shimmering on an all-too-loud sea or the sun rise...

That’s all Villa Monteferrante has to offer in this coastal town of Vasto, what I’d like to call the human dimension, that of the polis of a classical epoch, a city-state where the piazza, the square, is the people’s parliament, a stage to act upon, a place to charm and provoke, to sip espressos and read the papers, the townspeople being but players in a play you may call your very own.
